India To Upper Mustang Nepal Road Trip – Complete Guide
From your driveway to Lo Mangthang’s Walled City: entry permits, Bhansar, routes, fuel stops, checkpoints, and everything you need to know. Explore as locals.
Driving your own vehicle from India into the high Himalayan desert of Upper Mustang is one of the last great overland adventures on the subcontinent — a trans-border journey that takes you from the heat of the Indo-Gangetic plains to the Tibetan plateau in a matter of days.
Upper Mustang—the "Forbidden Kingdom of Lo"—remained closed to the outside world until 1992. Even today it is a restricted area, and the combination of transnational paperwork, remote terrain, and ever-shifting road conditions makes planning this trip genuinely challenging. This guide pulls together everything you need: the legal framework for Indian vehicles entering Nepal, the new 2026 permit structure, day-by-day route intelligence, and the ground-level community knowledge that Google results rarely surface.
Join Trekking Trail Nepal and get the best option to explore Upper Mustang with your bike or car. To make it easier, cheaper, and better, we offer 2 options from the Nepal-India border or from Pokhara to Pokhara.
