India To Upper Mustang Nepal Road Trip – Complete Guide

From your driveway to Lo Mangthang’s Walled City: entry permits, Bhansar, routes, fuel stops, checkpoints, and everything you need to know. Explore as locals.

Driving your own vehicle from India into the high Himalayan desert of Upper Mustang is one of the last great overland adventures on the subcontinent — a trans-border journey that takes you from the heat of the Indo-Gangetic plains to the Tibetan plateau in a matter of days.

Upper Mustang—the "Forbidden Kingdom of Lo"—remained closed to the outside world until 1992. Even today it is a restricted area, and the combination of transnational paperwork, remote terrain, and ever-shifting road conditions makes planning this trip genuinely challenging. This guide pulls together everything you need: the legal framework for Indian vehicles entering Nepal, the new 2026 permit structure, day-by-day route intelligence, and the ground-level community knowledge that Google results rarely surface.

Join Trekking Trail Nepal and get the best option to explore Upper Mustang with your bike or car. To make it easier, cheaper, and better, we offer 2 options from the Nepal-India border or from Pokhara to Pokhara.

Famous Attracton, Navigation & Tea Houses for Drivers

Muktinath (3,760 m), about 22 km east of Jomsom connected with a blacktop road. From Muktinath, you loop back (12Km) to Kagbeni before heading north to Lo Manthang. The drive from Muktinath back to Kagbeni takes about 20–25 minutes. From Kagbeni, Lo Manthang is a 4–5 hour drive in good conditions. Making the Muktinath to Lo Manthang total around 5–6 hours. Most travelers visiting both will use Jomsom or Kagbeni as their overnight base.

Best Hotel and Overnight Stops for Self-Drive

Tea houses in Upper Mustang are not the heavily-trodden infrastructure of the Everest or Annapurna Base Camp. Many are family-run homestays with basic but clean facilities. Pricing is higher than lower Nepal due to the remoteness and limited supply chains.

Frequently Asked Questions of Mustang Road Trip

Can I take my Mahindra Thar from India all the way to Lo Manthang?

Big YES!  the Thar (Any generation) is one of the best vehicles for this route. You will need Bhansar at Sonauli, the driving route permit for Upper Mustang, and your RAP/ACAP permits with Trekking Trail Nepal. The most challenging section is Beni–Jomsom (specifically Rupse and Kabre Cliffs); the Kagbeni to Lo Manthang section is difficult but manageable with good clearance.

Is the Upper Mustang permit still USD 500?

No. As of December 2025, Nepal replaced the flat USD 500/10-day permit with USD 50 per person per day. Indian nationals pay the USD 50 daily rate but can pay in Nepali Rupee equivalent. ACAP remains NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.

Do I need a guide if I am self-driving my own vehicle?

Yes, a licensed guide from legit trekking company is mandatory regardless of your mode of transport. This is enforced at the Kagbeni checkpoint. Traveling without a guide will result in being turned back, and your permits become invalid.

How long can my Indian vehicle stay in Nepal?

A maximum of 30 days total in a calendar year. Your Bhansar must be valid for each day the vehicle is in Nepal. Get it for the number of days you plan to be there plus one buffer day. Exceeding the validity without extension from a Nepal Customs office results in heavy penalties.

Route and Road Conditions: Sonauli to Lo Manthang

The full overland route from the Sonauli border crossing to Lo Manthang “ Capital of Upper Mustang”  about 1000 km depending on your entry point in India and exploration of detour. The road character changes dramatically as you cross the Himalayas,  from blacktop highway with hairpin turns near the border to boulder-strewn river tracks deep inside Upper Mustang.

Road Conditions: What to Expect on Upper Mustang Road Trip

The Beni–Jomsom highway (known as the Kali Gandaki corridor road project) is under continuous development. As of early 2026, roughly 15–20 km between Beni and Kagbeni remain unpaved and dusty, but enjoyable with any kind of vehicles except natural process and monsoon season. Beyond Kagbeni, roads to Lo Manthang are wide dirt-gravel tracks challenging but not technical by serious off-road standards.

NOTE: Powerful canyon winds can be brutal in afternoon hours between Jomsom and Lomangthang. Start early as possible and cross the most exposed sections before noon.

The final stretch between Tsarang and Lo Manthang has been a bit challenging as deep dust is available on some corners, making the last push to the walled city comparatively difficult.

The Pokhara-Jomsom section passes through the world's deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki, next to rupee water fall between world 7th highest mountain Dhaulagiri and 10th Annapurna.

MONSOON WARNING (JULY to SEPTEMBER) NOT Recommended

Avoid the Beni–Jomsom section during peak monsoon. Landslides and rock fall are frequent. Upper Mustang itself lies in a rain shadow of the Himalayas and stays relatively dry even in monsoon. Here many overlanders fly to Jomsom during July–August and begin their drive from there. The best windows for the full overland journey are March to early July and September–December.

NOTE: If you are keen for Upper Mustang Road Trip during monsoon, please spare extra days and gear-up with technical and humanitarian essentials. Overlanding in group is highly recommended for July to September.

The Korala Border:  A New Development

In late November 2025, Nepal officially opened the Korala border crossing between Upper Mustang and Tibet; China. However, This is not yet a functional border for any nationals, only officials, locals, and cargo can cross the border.

NOTE: Only Nepalese and Chinese, citizens can got to the border post. Nyamdo, Thinggar, and Yachubu village is the ultimate destination for all other nationals, even with Upper Mustang restrict area permits.

Vehicle Requirements and 4×4 Off-Roading Upper Mustang

What Vehicle Should You Take?

For the Beni to Jomsom and to Lo Manthang corridor, any serious off-road capable 4WD will do the job. A minimum 200 mm ground clearance is essential. However 4WD mode makes more comfortable for most of upper mustang sections. Manual transmission is strongly preferred over automatic on the steep grades.

Manual 4WDs are the undisputed kings of the Himalayas off-roads of Upper Mustang. It comes with more control, better response on steep gravel, dusts, slush, and easier to manage when you are fighting canyon winds above 3,500 metres.

Recommended Indian vehicles for this route:

  • Mahindra Thar (2020+): Purpose-built, excellent ground clearance, hugely popular with Indian overlanders on this route.
  • Toyota Fortuner (diesel, manual): Comfortable for multi-day driving, good departure angle on river crossings.
  • Mitsubishi Pajero / Pajero Sport: Proven workhorse; local drivers in Mustang favor this platform.
  • Force Gurkha: Tight cabin but exceptional off-road geometry for technical sections.
  • Isuzu D-Max / Toyota Hilux: Good for gear-heavy overlanding setups.

NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR UPPER MUSTANG ROAD TRIP

Trekking Trail Nepal do not recommended, any sedan cars (even diesel), FWD crossovers, or low-clearance SUVs should not attempt the route beyond Tatopani. The Kabre Cliffs and Rupse waterfall section (Beni–Jomsom) have destroyed undercarriages of ill-prepared vehicles.

Fuel Availability for Upper Mustang Road Trip

The Fuel Situation: Plan Carefully

Ghasa is the last reliable fuel stop before Lo Manthang. There is no guaranteed petrol station between Jomsom and Lo Manthang.  a distance of roughly 130 km of demanding off-road driving. Fuel is theoretically available at some tea houses and small shops in villages like Chele, Ghami, and Lomangthag but supply is inconsistent and prices are significantly higher.

CRITICAL FUEL ADVICE

Fill your tank completely in Ghasa before crossing the Himalayas. For 4WD vehicles, aim for a minimum of 50 litres reserve beyond what your calculated consumption requires. Carry a 10–20 litre jerry can if possible.

Kagbeni Checkpoint: The Gateway of Upper Mustang

Kagbeni village 2804m, sits at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong Khola rivers and is the official gateway into Upper Mustang. The checkpoint here is strict. Officials verify all permits before allowing passage north. Your vehicle documentation, RAP, ACAP, Trekking Trail Nepal licensed guide credentials, and driving route permit are all checked here.

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP): original permit document from the Department of Immigration with Trekking Trail Nepal.
  • ACAP Permit: Annapurna Conservation Area permit card.
  • Bhansar dDocument: Nepal Customs vehicle pass (pink receipt).
  • Driving Route Permit: Specific upper Mustang vehicle entry document.
  • Vehicle RC: Original Registration Certificate of your Indian vehicle.
  • Valid Indian Passport / Voter ID: Photo ID for each traveler.
  • Licensed guide: Guide must present their credentials at the checkpoint. Without a guide, you will be returned back.

There are also permit checks within Upper Mustang at various villages and on the return journey at Kagbeni again. Your guide of Trekking Trail Nepal will care for these jobs and all official requirements.
