Mongar | Place to Visit in Bhutan 2024
Mongar, a small town that is the district headquarters of Mongar District. Built on the side of the hill instead of the nest to river on the valley floor like other towns in the kingdom. Mongar Dzong was established at the beginning of 19th century when the site of Shongar was abandoned. The present Dzong dates from 1953, when it was founded on the orders from the third king, Jigme Dorje Wangchuk. Besides its functions as an administrative center, it houses the regions Drukpa monastic community.
